Misc comments
This is my first Wordpress plugin I have written from scratch and what a learning curve it has been. Being the first release, I’m pretty sure something won’t work as planned. Please let me know of any problems you find. I’ll add more details to this page after my fingers have recuperated a bit from all this typing.
You can also leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Brilliant plugin, and I’ve tried quite a few. Only drawback: It can only take images from public albums. My feature request for 1.1 would be to be able to publish images from private albums as well, for private blogs.
Of course, I can make one public album (since the images will be on a public weblog as well…)

Great plugin! I also have feature request for 1.1. The posibility to insert one image without classes or other styling. Just one pure image
Keep up the good work!

Great plugin! I’ve been looking for something like this for a while.
I was wondering if there was any way to add a couple more thumb/image sizes — I want to use 120px (1:1) and 400px (4:3) thumbs on my blog. I’ve tried to add them to the plugin but can’t get it to work for me,
Love your work though, keep it up…

Hi all,
Thanks for the feedback.
Just released version 1.1 which adds the missing image sizes of 288,320 and 400. Note that these are only supported in uncropped formats.
Thickbox support is now working properly - Thanks Darkmatter for reporting the bug.

Why wont thickbox work? The images wont open in thickbox…
October 31st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
Do you have a thickbox plugin installed?
Picasa Image Express only adds the HTML (class=’thickbox” on an A tag) required to trigger a Thickbox - it doesn’t include the actual Thickbox code as part of the plugin.
Here is a Thickbox plugin which I can confirm does work:

November 1st, 2008 at 2:46 pm
This plugin really looks promising!! But what I am searching for is a plugin capable of showing images from unlisted albums - as long as username and password is provided of course.
I stumbled upon a php api wrapping the picasa api. Mayby you could use it to implement support for unlisted albums?

Yes, I had the thickbox installed… but I’ll try again with the one you linked to here. I guess you’ll hear more from me if it wont work
November 2nd, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Nope, it wont work.
http://skogshund.norblogg.net/?page_id=146 <– those thumbnails, made my picasa image express, wont open in thickbox.
I think it has something to do with the adress that the thumbnails are linking to. I don’t think thats “valid” for thickbox.
Example: http://lh6.ggpht.com/natusan/SQCdvzlG6hI/AAAAAAAAHFY/aInflaRFrKA/IMG_2005-Edit.jpg?imgmax=576
I don’t think thickbox likes the ?imgmax=576 in the end of the adress.
Can you help me make it work?

Great tool, although I am finding a small issue.
I prefer fairly large thumbnails, about 500px wide. When I set the thumbnail size in the settings to 512 and insert an image no thumbnail shows up in the post. If I set the thumbnail size when inserting the image, the largest size available in the drop down is 160px.
What am I missing?

Hello! Great plugin. Like that it works very quick.
One thing that I would like to have in future is possibility to insert not just an album, but whole list of albums like in “kPicasa gallery” plugin.
I installed Adobe Flex, but I can’t import this project which is in the ZIP file. Can somebody please write short description how to compile this source to SWF ?
I want to add Highslide support and it needs to simply add “class=”highslide” onclick=”return hs.expand(this)” ” to every thumb.

If doesn’t work in your blog, try add Lightbox2 plugin.

This is a fantastic plugin — just what I was looking for! But I am unable to select multiple photos in either Safari or Camino on a Mac with Flash 10. Any ideas?
Thanks!
January 8th, 2009 at 7:11 am
This plugin was working great with 400px thumbnails- not sure if it was the switch to 2.7, or a change of settings, but I now get the image width/height bug as well, and no thumbnails over 160 px work.
This is by far the nicest Picasa plugin I’ve found, and it would be worth fixing!
I second the request for access to private albums. I would like to be able to present images through a wordpress site without making them public on Picasa- presentation is everything!
Thanks, I am looking forward to using this plugin soon.
January 8th, 2009 at 5:56 pm
Just wanted to say multiple select is now working for me — not sure what the issue was at first. Many thanks again for a great plugin - just the right tool for the job!
January 9th, 2009 at 4:46 am
I found a workaround for the image width/height bug:
Selecting and then deselecting the “crop 1:1″ option in the options section of the flash module (the lightbox that pops up from the wordpress editor when you click on the picasa icon) will rest the thumbnail dimensions dropdown, allowing thumbnail sizes greater than 160 px to be selected at this stage of the game.
Looks like something is getting messed up when the options set in wordpress admin get passed to the flash module, maybe?
Though it would be great to have this fixed, the plugin works spectacularly otherwise.
January 14th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Wow. This plugin is pretty awesome and just what I need. I’m trying to optimise mu blog by hosting most of it’s images in good old picasa, and this little plug makes adding single images to posts about as easy as I could imagine! Very good stuff.
I end up deleting a lot of the code it generates, like the class=”" it adds to each image etc, and the max image width restriction attribute I often strip out. Little things like that are a small price to pay for such awesome functionality though!
I’d love the ability to configure it to just insert an image but no classes, width and height or maxwidth restrictions set though
Anyway, thanks Psytoy!

February 4th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Want to say thanks very much for your work on this plugin. I had no luck with the bogdan.ro plugin so I was relieved to see that this was just what I needed.
Part way through I realized that I’d be really happy if the process was entirely automated, where the php checked Picasaweb and listed all albums in a sidebar. Clicking on the preview image would bring you to a secondary page that listed all the thumbs (and opened via Lightbox). This would be extremely useful as I would just have my photos on a sidebar and never have to make a separate blog post if I added a new album.
But hey that may pie in the sky. Kudos for what’s already been done!

February 7th, 2009 at 3:29 am
Okay - I finally overcame the problem in internationalizing (before being able to localize) your plugin, Scrawl.
I’ve taken the liberty of slightly modding your plugin, just to accommodate other translations, as well as adding a Spanish translation of it - as with other WordPress plugins, it follows the locale set in the wp-config.php file (if it’s set to es_ES it’ll show up in Spanish; else, the English version.) And given the slight modifications involved, I’ve taken the liberty of bumping the version by a minor point to 1.1.1 and clarifying / documenting the minor change in the readme.txt.
Feel free to download that slightly hacked plugin over here - and please feel free also to incorporate whatever change in your official release.
February 7th, 2009 at 5:44 pm
Uh almost… I just realized that the .swf file contains strings that I’d have to localize as well, and then recompile into a different .swf and link to that instead - but that just doesn’t seem like the best way to deal with it.
So, unless there’s someone out there willing to help out hacking the .swf so that it loads UI strings from an external .xml I’ll have to leave the image viewer / browser part of the plugin as-is… Oh well.

Hi all,
Just a quick note to say development on this plugin isn’t dead. I intend to release version 2 sometime this week.
Notable features include:
Better integration with Wordpress’s image properties panel (captions, alignment, etc), Highslide support, Additional gallery alignment options, Cleaner HTML with less redundant tags, Multilanguage ready.
I have also finally fixed the bug relating to thumbnails larger than 400 not inserting properly.
Truth be told, not much will have changed on the surface of the plugin. Underneath the hood however is a different story. Hell is trying to decipher what on earth TinyMCE does to inserted HTML. You can’t imagine the frustration trying to work out what post-formatting of HTML it does when switching between WYSIWYG and source view. Hence the giant jump to version 2. It makes it all seem worth the effort.
If you wish to contribute a translation in your language, contact me at scrawl AT psytoy.net.
Other than that, watch this space

Hi!
Great, great work
I use WP for my family. It is difficult to learn my father how to upload images, when he is used to Picasa. Now it is easy.
Question: can you add an option that the whole album is inserted as a gallery (Next Gen Gallery)?
April 17th, 2009 at 3:32 am
I also tried out this plugin, but even if I enter the right URL to my Picasa-Account, i get the following error:
“Unable to laod albums
Please double check the Picasa user name. Additionally, check your have albums are setup as publicly available”
In the plugin option i configured http://picasaweb.google.com/Duerrbi
In a browser i can reach this URL, but in Wordpress Post-Editor.

Hi buddy,
Been using your plugin for some time now. Really like it. I do however, have some problems with viewing galleries in IE7+8. For som reason, when one inserts a single image on a page or post, everything works, both in ie6+7+8, Chrome and Firefox. But if you insert multiple images, it doesn’t work in IE! No images are shown, although it works fine, if viewed with chrome or ff!
Anyway thought you should know. And let me know if you have a solution

Hi all,
Just wanted to share another public test version of Picasa Image Express. Download it from http://psytoy.net/files/wordpress/picasa-images-express-250409.zip
The CSS should be a bit more robust. Not quite sure how well it works with IE8 and WP 2.8 yet.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:45 am
I‘m using IE8 8.0.6001.18702.
When i changed the code [if lt ie 8] to [if IE 8] in picasa-image-express.php , the CSS for IE8 works, it shows pictures in vertical line not horizontal, but i’ve set it in horizontal. It’s same while using the test version.

If I don’t hear of any other major issues in the next week, this will officially be released and available via Wordpress’s plugin update.
June 27th, 2009 at 12:59 pm
Hi,
I am testing Picasa and WordPress at the moment and this is a really great plugin.
But I have one question:
Who do I have to select a size for the option “large image size”?
If I select “800″, the parameter “?imgmax=800″ is appended to the link.
If I delete this parameter within the link, the picture is shown with original size (this is what I prefer, because my images in Picasa are larger than 800px).
So it is possible to disable the option (e.g. like the parameter “-1″ for margins)?
June 27th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
If I insert multiple photos, the words “[pie left]” and “[/pie]” are added in the post. What does this mean? Using beta-version from June, 26th, WordPress 2.7 and Firefox.
June 27th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
Hi Alain,
Picasa does allow you to direct link to images of sizes 912, 1024, 1152, 1280, 1440 and 1600 but if you try to embed them into a webpage, it will fail. It’s a limitation put in by Picasa. Might be able to do something for version 2.1.
[pie] appears when you insert a gallery of images. The tag is only visible during editing. [pie left] will left align the gallery, [pie right] will align it right, etc.
I included this tag to make it easier to insert text before and after a gallery. It also works as a visual cue when editing a post so you know where a gallery starts and ends.
Some people might want to insert a bunch of images into a post but not have them formatted using Picasa Image Express’s gallery styles. In this case, all they have to do is delete the [pie] tags.
